RADIOLOGY & IMAGEOLOGY

About the Department:

Radiology was a basic supportive service in the erstwhile Nizam Orthopedic Hospital (NOH), established in 1964. Facilities for special procedures in Conventional Radiology (cerebral angiogram, myelogram, ventriculogram etc.) were added since 1976 when it became the Nizam’s Institute of Orthopedic & Specialties (NIOS). The present Department of Radiology & Imageology, came into existence, when the Government transferred NIOS to IMS on March 25, 1986 under the name of Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). Since 1988-89 the existing department has established itself as one of the major clinical specialties of the Institute.

Prof Kakarla Subbarao, the visionary administrator and eminent Radiologist, headed the Department since 1986, subsequently passing the baton to Prof V Subbalakshmi Murthy in 1989. After Dr Subbalakshmi (1989-2000) the Department was headed by Dr I Sreedevi (2000-01) and then by Dr Jagan Mohan Reddy (2001-03) respectively. Since 2004 Dr S Rammurti has been serving the department as the lead.

The first MRI Scanner (0.3T Fonar Inc, USA) in South India, and the third in the country then (1989), was acquired by the Department. At that point of time it was one of the few Departments, among public and private sector institutions, to have acquired state of the art imaging facilities. Over the years the Department has grown and is recognized as a sought after training facility among radiology departments in the country. It is fully equipped with all the modern modalities of diagnostic Imaging and Intervention to serve various disciplines from within and outside the Institute.
